How to know your skin type: a practical guide for Kenyan shoppers

You do not need a bathroom shelf full of products to start caring for your skin. You need a routine you can repeat comfortably. Understanding how your skin behaves is a better starting point than buying whatever is trending.

Watch your skin over several ordinary days

Notice your forehead, nose, chin and cheeks at different times. Does your whole face look shiny, or only your nose? Do your cheeks feel rough or tight? Does a familiar moisturiser leave you comfortable? Consider what happens on a typical day, rather than immediately after exercise or a strong cleanser. Avoid leaving irritated skin bare just to complete a test.

PatternWhat you may noticeA sensible starting point
OilyShine across much of the faceLight moisturiser and a cleanser that does not leave you tight
DryRoughness, flaking or tightnessA comfortable moisturiser before optional active serums
CombinationOilier forehead and nose, drier cheeksAdjust moisturiser by area rather than treating the whole face as oily
BalancedGenerally comfortable, without persistent oiliness or drynessKeep a simple routine; an active serum is optional
Sensitive or reactiveProducts often sting, burn or cause a reactionCheck fragrance and other triggers; get professional advice for ongoing symptoms

Sensitivity can overlap with oily, dry or combination skin. Skin behaviour may also change with products, medication and seasons. These descriptions help with shopping; they do not diagnose eczema, rosacea or another condition.

Find a cautious starting routine

This short tool uses your observations to suggest where to begin. It does not assess photos or diagnose skin conditions. Your selections stay on this page and are not saved or sent to Zuvelle.

Build the base before adding a serum

Start with cleansing, moisturising and daytime sun protection. Compare Dr Rashel Aloe Vera Deep Cleansing Facial Cleanser and Aloe Vera 3-in-1 Moisture Cream, checking the complete ingredient label against your needs. The name “aloe” does not establish that a formula is fragrance-free or suitable for sensitive skin.

If a serum fits your goal, choose one at first. Estelin 5D Hyaluronic Acid is a hydration candidate; Estelin Rosehip Niacinamide is an option to consider for uneven-looking tone or shine. See the six-serum comparison before deciding. Check the current product page for price and availability.

Introduce changes slowly

Try a new product on a small test area for seven to ten days, following its label. Introduce one change at a time so that you can identify a possible trigger. Burning, swelling or an ongoing rash is a reason to stop and seek advice, not a sign that the product is working. Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty or facial swelling.

Take a weekly note of comfort and the products you used. If you already have a routine that works, keep it: identifying a skin type is not a reason to replace everything.
