How to use a vitamin C serum (and what not to mix it with)
Vitamin C is one of the best ingredients for brighter, more even skin, but only if you use it the right way. Here's how.
When to apply it
Use vitamin C in the morning. Apply it after cleansing and before moisturiser and sunscreen. Together with sunscreen, it helps protect your skin through the day.
How to apply it
- Wash your face with a gentle cleanser, such as Vitamin C Brightening & Anti-Aging Facial Cleanser (KSh 450).
- Put 2–3 drops of serum on your fingertips and press it into your face and neck.
- Wait a minute, then apply moisturiser.
- Finish with sunscreen, such as Aloe Vera Soothing Sun Cream SPF 50+ (KSh 600).
Try Turmeric Vitamin C Brightening Face Serum (KSh 650) or Vitamin C Brightening & Anti-Aging Face Serum (KSh 500).
Can I mix it with other ingredients?
- Niacinamide: yes, most people can use both. If your skin tingles, use vitamin C in the morning and niacinamide at night.
- Retinol: use them at different times. Vitamin C in the morning, retinol at night.
- Exfoliating acids (like salicylic acid): if your skin is sensitive, don't apply them in the same routine. Alternate days instead.
Tips for best results
- Patch-test first: apply a little on your inner arm and wait 24 hours.
- If your skin is sensitive, start every other morning and build up.
- Store the bottle closed, away from sunlight and heat.
- Results build up with daily use over several weeks.
